Mexico (AFP) – Mexico’s President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said on Monday that the country’s richest man, Carlos Slim, had paid $1.35 billion in taxes to sell a subsidiary in the United States of Alliance America Movil.
“America Movil sold its subsidiary in the United States and paid in Mexico, on December 16, 28 billion pesos to the public treasury” (about $1.35 billion), Lopez Obrador wrote on Twitter.
The president’s announcement came with a picture of him during an iftar with Saleem, the country’s richest man, whose fortune is estimated at 63 thousand million dollars.
“I had breakfast with Carlos Slim, who, in addition to being a good friend and businessman, contributes to the development of the country,” he said.
On November 23, América Móvil reported that it had finished selling its stake in Tracfone, the largest US mobile operator, to Verizon. For the deal, Slim received $3.625 million and 57 million Verizon shares.
Although Lopez Obrador maintains a distant relationship with the Mexico Special Initiative, he is close to Slim, whose confederations are involved in various sectors of the Mexican economy such as construction and mining.
