Samsung now allows you to reuse your old phones as light and sound sensors for smart homes
In a great initiative, Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling at Home program allows you to breathe new life into your old smartphone by turning it into an Internet of Things device for your smart home.
The new service, which is currently in beta for users in the US, UK and South Korea, reuses sensors built into Samsung Galaxy devices such as smart sound and light sensors.
Users can try new features in the SmartThings app under the SmartThings Labs section. A compatible phone can be used as a light sensor to measure the brightness of the room and cause the lights or the TV to turn on when it gets dark.
A new sound detection function, based on artificial intelligence, allows you to distinguish noise from the environment. This way, the user can record the sounds detected or receive an alert if a baby’s crying, a dog’s barking, a cat’s meow, or any blow is recognized.
