Gina Rodriguez will make her film director debut with a boxing tape
Variety reported Tuesday that Gina Rodriguez will direct, write and star in a boxing movie that will see her debut as a film director on the big screen.
This untitled film will be inspired by the life and experiences of Mexican boxer Ryan Garcia. The fighter will play a fictional version of himself in this movie and share the spotlight with Rodriguez. Latina will write the script for this film with Bernardo Cupria and will also appear as producer.
This feature film would see her directorial debut on the big screen, but Rodriguez has already directed episodes for TV in series like Jane the Virgin, Diaries of a Future President or the remake of Charmed.
Rodriguez noted that boxing was widely followed in his family and commented that he “loves” watching sports movies with his father.
He said, “The philosophy of fighting – hard work, focus, honesty, fighting fair but to win – stayed with me.”
Best known in the United States for the Golden Globe-winning “Jane the Virgin” for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, Rodriguez has recently starred in several films such as “Miss Bala Remake” (2019), “Kajillionaire” (2020) by Miranda July, or “Awake” from Netflix (2021), which hit the digital platform last week.
His future projects, in addition to this boxing movie, include a movie about “Carmen Sandiego”, the adventure comedy “The Missing”, the romantic movie “I Want You Back” or the series aimed at family audiences “Ole”.
