Chile has two changes due to the rejection of English clubs | Sports
SANTIAGO (AFP) – Chile has called up Catholic University striker Diego Valencia on an emergency basis to replace fellow striker Ben Brereton, who was banned from traveling to the country to object to the triple-scheduled Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Burton, from a Chilean mother and English father, made his debut for the Chilean national team in the last Copa America and scored a goal against Bolivia. And the player indicated on his social networking sites that it was unlikely that his club, Blackburn Rovers, from the English second division, would allow him to respond to La Roja’s invitation.
Uruguay coach Martin Lasarte decided to call up Valencia to replace Ben Brereton. And the striker indicated on his social networking sites that it is unlikely that his club, Blackburn Rovers, from the English second division, would be able to respond to the Chilean team’s appeal.
Brereton’s absence is not the only one that Uruguay coach Martin Lasarte has to deal with due to restrictions imposed by English clubs on the transfer of players from countries appearing on the UK government’s red list. Those who have been recalled will have to comply with a mandatory 10-day quarantine upon return.
Central Francisco Cerralta, of Watford in the Premier League, was not released, as was defender Valber Huerta, of La Catolica.
Other teams in South America, including teams from Brazil and Uruguay, will not have players competing in Europe.
Chile should face Brazil at home on September 2, Ecuador on September 5, and Colombia on Thursday 9.
The decision not to loan South American players to their teams was made by the Premier League, which was joined by Italy and Spain.
One of those summoned and who arrived in Chile on Sunday is Inter Milan midfielder Arturo Vidal, who said upon his arrival: “I don’t want to go into this issue. Every country has its rules and we hope that everyone will come.”
