Much of the baseball world is gearing up for the World Baseball Classic, but there's another fun preseason day on the calendar: the MLB Spring Breakout. Now in its third year, Spring Breakout plays feature rosters consisting solely of each team's prospects, who have the opportunity to showcase their ability against some of the other young talent in the sport.
The Yankees announced their 2026 spring roster
The Yankees this afternoon revealed the roster that will replace this spring outing.
The Yankees have just announced their roster for this year's playoff series, which will take place against the Braves on March 21st at George M. Steinbrenner Field:
The list features nearly every major prospect in the Yankees' system, as every player above rookie ball on MLB Pipeline's Top 30 list (with the exception of Rule 5 draftee Cade Winquest) appears on the list.
The biggest prospects to watch are some players fans will know from last year, such as George Lamboder Jr., Elmer Rodriguez and Carlos LaGrange. In fact, LaGrange, who had a breakout spring break last season, struck out 11 consecutive basemen while hitting 100 mph hitters.LaGrange ranked just 19th on the Yankees' prospect list, but is now one of the club's most exciting prospects.
In this list there are many candidates who can do something similar to Lagrange last year, announcing their presence on the big stage before they will have a big year.Right-handers Ben Hess and Bryce Cunningham, the Yankees' first two picks in the 2024 draft, should see the field, and could move up prospect lists quickly this year if they can adjust their games.Henry Lalane is tantalizing as the left side of Lagrange, The 6-foot-7 lefty is still able to touch the upper 90s after dealing with shoulder issues. Then there's Chase Hampton, once the Yankees' top prospect who just now has a shot at re-establishing himself after Tommy John surgery.
Elsewhere, it will be nice to see Lombardo and Dax Kilby, who have shared hopes, and dream about the possibility of the two of them teaming up on the field in the Bronx one day. This is the type of MLB daydreamer who went to throw together Spring Breakout, and they've done a great job of creating an event that allows fans to get a good look at several players who will soon be heading to their minor league homes during the offseason.
