The deal guarantees the A's short-term value and buys out two years of potential free agency
Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson has agreed to a seven-year, $70 million contract extension, CBS Sports HQ's Jim Bowden confirms.
Wilson, 23, was voted AL Player of the Year by teammate Nick Kurtz last season. In 125 games, Wilson hit .311/.355/.444 (121 OPS+) with 26 doubles, 13 home runs, 63 RBI, 62 runs, five stolen bases and 3.0 WAR.He started the All-Star Game at shortstop for the American League.
The deal buys out the remaining arbitration years and all arbitration years beyond two years of free agency because Wilson wasn't expected to hit the open market until after the 2030 season. He's now locked up until 2032.
The deal came on the heels of the A's locking up left fielder Tyler Soderstrom to a seven-year, $86 million deal. It's interesting to note the two moves together, as the A's tore this club apart before leaving Oakland and now appear to be preparing for a hopeful move to Las Vegas. He will now continue to play minor league ball in Sacramento.
The A's were 76-86 last season, a seven-game improvement over 2024. They had winning records, however, in July, August and September, respectively, and were 35-29 after the All-Star break.
