Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski discusses Trump's comments about women's hockey
Zach Werenski joined the Blue Jackets for the morning skate in Boston on February 26th.
Then, still wearing his Team USA Olympic jersey, he talked about winning the gold medal at Milano Cortina 2026 and shared his team's laughter after President Donald Trump made disparaging comments about the U.S. women's team winning the gold medal during a phone call.
"It's an amazing group of women," Werenski said, according to The Athletic.
"I remember being at dinner for their gold medal game. I was glued to my phone watching it. Obviously, not a great moment (laughs at Trump's joke).
Werenski didn't stop there. She compared the game-winning goal Megan Keller scored in overtime to beat Canada in the women's game to the one she helped set up for Jack Hughes to beat Canada in OT.
"There's going to be a lot of girls out there who want to be Megan Keller and Caroline Harvey," Werenski said."They've changed the game of hockey and I couldn't be more supportive of them. Like I said, it obviously looks bad right now. It doesn't mean anything. The call was just a party. It's kind of a breeze, but they're amazing and we have nothing but the utmost respect and support for them."
Werenski didn't interact with any members of the U.S. women's team, mainly because she didn't have close friends on the women's team. The men's team, she said, talked to her friends on the women's team.
"I'm sorry for the appearance," Werensky said. But I think they know deep down how much support there is for them.
Werenski also talked about his role in setting up Jack Hughes' game-winning goal in overtime in a moment that captured the attention of the national team in a 2-1 win over Canada.
"There are going to be thousands, millions of kids who want to be Jack Hughes," Werenski said, according to Blue Jackets reporter Jeff Svoboda."I think the person should be the one giving."
