It may be surprisingly expensive, but early signs point to strong demand for Samsung's triple-screen phone.
When we first learned about the price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold, our first question was: Who can afford a nearly $3,000 phone? The answer, it turns out, is more people than you think.
When members of our team logged into Samsung's website this morning after the TriFold first went on sale in the US, only one person was able to secure the unit.Everyone else was greeted with a message that the device was out of stock and would be restored soon, suggesting that the phone sold out within minutes.
We don't have any information on how many Trifolds Samsung has offered to US buyers and how many have been sold, but it shows there's demand for the new phone – even if it costs $2,900, says senior pricing reporter David Lamp.
Perhaps it's not so surprising that this innovative phone is so popular, as our first hands-on experience with the device made it clear that this phone is a true two-in-one that combines the best of Samsung's phone and tablet technologies.
"I would be surprised if Samsung has massive volumes and enough wealthy tech enthusiasts in the US market to try out this latest and greatest technology," said Ben Wood, principal analyst and CMO at CCS Insight.in the US right now."
If you're not one of the early adopters eager to get your hands on the Trifold today, or if you're interested, look out for our full review soon. After spending some time with the device, I can share a detailed verdict on whether this expensive phone is really worth nearly $3,000.
