The American League Cy Young For the 2022 Season
The American League Cy Young was won last year by Robbie Ray. He pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays. Ray was traded to the Seattle Mariners in the offseason. He has a great chance to potentially repeat as the AL Cy Young candidate.
There will be other candidates to potentially win this award this year as well. There are picks against the spread that is already out for Opening Day across the MLB. However, what are some of the odds for the potential AL Cy Young Award winners this year?
Gerrit Cole +400
Gerrit Cole will be the New York Yankees ace for the upcoming 2022 MLB regular season. He is going to have to pitch great against these dominant lineups in the American League East. The Boston Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Tampa Bay Rays could all be better than them this year.
Even though the Baltimore Orioles are not going to be very good either, they are going to be loaded up and down the lineup. Gerrit Cole is going to need to bring his A game no matter what when he steps on the mound.
He pitched in 30 games last season for the New York Yankees. His record was 16-8 with a 3.23 ERA. Cole pitched in 181.1 innings and gave up 151 hits and 69 runs. Gerrit Cole walked 41 batters and struck out 243, along with his 1.059 WHIP.
Gerrit Cole feels like more a fade bet rather than actually a good bet for the American League Cy Young this year for the New York Yankees because his starts are up and down.
Shane Bieber +600
Shane Bieber was hurt for part of the 2021 regular season and that is why he didn’t pitch in as many games for the Cleveland Guardians. He won the American League Cy Young a couple of years and felt like one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.
Bieber is the ace of this rotation and he has the chance to win the award again if he stays healthy. Cleveland will not be a very good baseball team this year and awards in baseball usually don’t matter if your team makes it to the playoffs or not.
In 16 games started last year for the Guardians, his record was 7-4 with a 3.17 ERA. Bieber pitched in 96.2 innings and gave up 84 hits and 36 runs. He walked 33 batters and struck out 134, along with a 1.21 WHIP. Bieber feels like a great bet to win the American League Cy Young if he can stay healthy and if injuries don’t derail him.
Robbie Ray +900
Robbie Ray has the third-best odds to win the American League Cy Young this year. He is now with the Seattle Mariners after being traded from the Toronto Blue Jays in the offseason.
Ray pitched in 32 games last season with Toronto. His record was 13-7 with a 2.84 ERA. In 193.1 innings pitched, Robbie Ray gave up 150 hits and 62 runs. Robbie Ray walked only 52 batters and struck out 248 of them, along with a 1.045 WHIP.
Arguably, Robbie Ray is pitching in an easier division this year because he is out of the AL East and in the AL West. The Oakland Athletics and the Texas Rangers will not be that good and neither will be the Los Angeles Angels. The Houston Astros will still be really good, but will miss shortstop Carlos Correa’s presence and bat big time in Houston, Texas.
Robbie Ray would be a solid bet to repeat as the AL Cy Young Winner.
Lucas Giolito +1000
The Chicago White Sox had one of the best starting rotations in the American League last season. Chicago won the AL Central because of it and Giolito has gotten better in every single season he has pitched in.
His record last season in 31 games pitched with the Chicago White Sox was 11-9 with a 3.53 ERA. In 178.2 innings pitched, Lucas Gioloto gave up 145 hits and 74 runs. He also gave up 52 walks and struck out 201 batters, along with a 1.103 WHIP.
