Putins Wiretap Leak Aims to Destabilize Germany, Says Defence Minister
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of attempting to create discord and chaos by leaking an army discussion about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The 38-minute recording of talks on Taurus missiles and other long-range weapons was posted online on Russian social media, leading Pistorius to label it as part of Putin’s information war.
Pistorius has called the leak an effort to destabilize and unsettle Germany, as the country faces pressure to provide Taurus missiles to Kyiv. However, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has so far refused to send the missiles, fearing that doing so could escalate tensions with nuclear-armed Russia.
While France and Britain have already supplied Ukraine with SCALP and Storm Shadow missiles, Germany has been hesitant to make similar moves. Britain has denied any direct involvement in operating the missiles, stating that Ukraine’s Armed Forces are responsible for their use and targeting processes.
Pistorius is now waiting for the results of a military probe into the leak before deciding on any consequences. In the meantime, the German government remains cautious about its actions in the conflict, wary of sparking further escalation with Russia.
The situation highlights the tensions and complexities involved in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with external powers such as Russia and Western countries playing a key role in determining the outcome. As Germany grapples with the fallout from the leaked army discussion, the world watches closely to see how the situation will unfold.
