Germany accuses Russia of waging an ‘information war’ after alleged military leak
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has accused Russia of conducting an information war after an audio recording of senior military officials discussing weapons for Ukraine was leaked. The recording, which was published by Russian media, prompted Moscow to demand an explanation from Germany.
Germany has called the incident an act of eavesdropping and has launched an investigation into the leak. Pistorius labeled the incident as part of Putin’s information war aimed at creating divisions and undermining unity. The Kremlin has denied accusations of spreading false information.
The leaked call includes discussions about the possible delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv, a move that Chancellor Olaf Scholz has publicly rejected. Kyiv has been asking Germany for military support, including Taurus missiles. Additionally, discussions in the leaked call cover the use of long-range missiles from France and Britain, as well as training for Ukrainian soldiers.
Scholz has described the leak as “very serious” and has promised a thorough investigation into the matter. German secret services have called the leak a “catastrophe.” Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has suggested that the recording indicates Berlin is preparing to fight Moscow.
The incident highlights the tensions between Russia and Germany, with both sides accusing each other of engaging in information warfare. As the investigation into the leaked call continues, the implications for diplomatic relations between the two countries remain uncertain.
