This metaphor is not entirely new.
Heading into the offseason, the 2025 Cleveland Browns knew their team was a work in progress, primarily because of the big question mark at quarterback.
So 2025 third-round rookie quarterback Dylan Gabriel preached the process.
"It's a results-based business, so don't get me wrong," Gabriel said during the Browns' mandatory minicamp in June.
Fast-forward five-and-a-half months, and no Browns quarterback has shown enough process and results to secure a long-term starting job.But after veteran Joe Flacco started four games and Gabriel started six, fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders got a second chance to start Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.
The book's results were similar this season to previous seasons.

Sanders was happy with what his colleague said in June.
"This team is not going to be a microwave affair," he said."We will have sparks here and there, but it will take time before we can develop that chemistry with everyone."
Sanders' words are true and valid in many ways.But Browns fans have reason to wonder. Will this team be a fully baked cake?Will the club figure out the most important piece to its puzzle with a playoff-caliber defense?
The loss would be the Browns' ninth in 12 games this season.But fans who prefer to microwave the slow cooker can remember the club's management: even the slow cooker has not been working lately.The Browns are now on their way to their fourth losing season in the last five years and 16th in the last 18 years.
At the micro level, Sanders faced a tougher opponent than in his first sanctions and failed to win the big wind, special teams failed with the chest that happened.
Still, head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Sanders, who went 16-of-25 for 149 yards and a touchdown, has his third start next week against the Tennessee Titans.That was more than Stefanski convinced after Sanders led the Browns to a 24-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
In the immediate short term, Sanders has done enough to earn another start.Furthermore, Stefanski declined to confirm whether Sanders will begin the remainder of the 2025 term.
"Yeah, I'm not going to get into everything," Stefanski said, "except we all have to play better."

Sander said that he tried to prict the correct adjustments.
"All quarterbacks know you have to cut the wind every time you throw," Sanders said."So at the same time, you're measuring speed and time for distance and travel everything. And I just do the math."
Sanders' 93.6 passer rating and 83.9 passer rating led to the Niners playing on the same field.But the Browns didn't give them enough chances, as they converted 27% of their third down attempts (3 of 3), 65% of their attempts (11 of 17), including just one third down in the second half.Didn't get it.

If the Browns look at Sanders' first two games against the quarterbacks that preceded him this season, they may have a hard time identifying who has best improved this roster.The differences arise in playing style and career stage;one quarterback was the most accurate, the other took fewer risks and the third displayed a unique brand of big-play skill.But statistically, Sanders' first two games weren't much better or worse than Flacco and Gabriel.
FlACCO completed 62.2% of his passes, throwing two touchdowns and three interceptions and a touchdown per game.Browns Averaged 16.5 points and 324.5 Total points per game in two games, both losses.
Gabriel completed 56.5% of his passes, threw two touchdowns and no interceptions in two games, averaging 205.5 passing yards per game.The Browns averaged 13 points and 285 yards per game;As with Flacco, they lost Gabriel's first two starts.
And the trophy?In those two starts, 60 percent of his passes were completed both ways.
Sanders scores remain unchanged, with the highest and lowest of the three.He'll get a chance to start next week against a 1-11 Titans team that may just be a setup to address Cleveland's needs.
Mr. Sanders is likely to consider the timing and cooperate.Many of the NFL's decision-makers have virtues, but this year's three-season conflict stops.And that door doesn't stop at the home of the Cardinals.
For at least another week, Sanders will continue to make the case that he can fix the Browns' quarterback if they trust him instead of relying on their 2026 cap hit.He'll make the case that the Browns follow a recipe for cooking fries instead of experimenting with a microwave.He believes that every game under him will help his chances.
"As players and players and as players, we have to have the ability to miss each other and be comfortable with each other in every situation," Sanders said."That takes time. That takes a lot of things.
“We have to be able to work and trust all the guys and wish them yours through a similar lens.
“We just have to feel comfortable and do everything accordingly.”
