After seven seasons in New York, Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II has requested a trade, sources told Adam Schefter on Monday.
New York Giants defensive end Dexter Lawrence II has requested a trade and will not participate in the team's offseason training program that begins Tuesday, league sources told ESPN.
Lawrence and the Giants have spent the last three years trying to negotiate a deal that reflects his value to the team, but nothing has moved forward.
Lawrence has two years left on his contract and is slated to make $20 million next season.
There was initial optimism that the change in the organization could move the discussion forward, but now that it hasn't, new Giants head coach John Harbaugh will open his team's offseason program this week without one of his top players.
"How important is it? Really important," Harbaugh told Lawrence in February."It's super, incredibly important. It's not the cornerstone, it's like the center. It's in the middle. It's a very big rock and it's very active, sporty rock."
Giants general manager Joe Schoen was asked last week at the NFL's annual meeting in Phoenix about the possibility of adjusting Lawrence's contract.
"Yeah, we're going to have a lot of those conversations again as we continue to build or, as you say, open the funds," he said."Like, where can we do that? Could we do an expansion with other players? What does that look like? So we're always having those conversations, not just with Dexter but with other players. And that's part of our offseason mapping and our planning."
Lawrence has been selected to three Pro Bowls and a second-team All-Pro selection since being drafted 17th overall by the Giants in 2019. But 2025 was a flop, as he was limited to half a sack, eight quarterback hits and an 8.3% passer percentage for a 4-13 team.
Lawrence, 28, has 30.5 career sacks, five forced fumbles and an interception.
