The hymn “God Save the King”, performed in honor of King Charles III on the day of his coronation, was widely booed at Anfield, ahead of the Liverpool-Brentford match in Round 35 of the English Premier League.
Throughout history, English football has paid homage to the new king’s accession to the throne, although his figure has been disapproved of in many stadiums.

Above all, it was Liverpool who felt the most nervous, with the King’s whistles highlighting.
Between the suppression of miners’ strikes in the mid-1980s and the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, which killed 97 Reds fans, the reasons for fans’ resentment towards government and institutions are numerous.
Last year, before the FA Cup and Premier League Cup finals, both of which Liverpool won at Wembley, Liverpool fans were loudly booed.

Immediately after the national anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, the club’s unofficial anthem, was sung at the top of its lungs throughout the stadium.

Despite the risk of being booed, the club decided to play the anthem on its public address system, as it does in all Premier League stadiums this weekend.
The controversy made several headlines throughout the week in England, despite Liverpool FC being strong in position to play the national anthem.

On Friday, at a press conference, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was diplomatic on the issue.
“The club’s position is mine. In addition, it is a subject on which I cannot have a firm opinion. I am German and we do not have a king or queen… I am 55 and I have not experienced that before.”
I am sure that many people in the country will celebrate the coronation. Others won’t care and others won’t like it. These are the things and this is the case all over the country.”
