UN Security Council fails to pass US resolution calling for Gaza ceasefire
In a recent session at the United Nations Security Council, Russia and China vetoed a US draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza. The resolution received 11 votes in favor, three against, and one abstention. Critics of the draft argued that it did not go far enough in demanding an immediate end to the conflict in Gaza.
The US was accused of pressuring Israel and failing to explicitly call for a ceasefire in the region. The proposed resolution tied the ceasefire to talks for a truce deal and the release of Israeli captives, which was met with disapproval by some council members.
The US ambassador criticized Russia and China for prioritizing politics over progress in the conflict. Algeria’s UN ambassador expressed frustration, stating that thousands of lives could have been saved if the resolution had been passed.
In response to the veto, elected members of the Security Council are now drafting their own resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire and the release of hostages. Additionally, France has announced that it will be working on a new UN resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza following the veto by Russia and China.
The situation in Israel and Gaza remains dire, with no end to the conflict in sight. The international community continues to grapple with finding a solution to the violence that has claimed the lives of countless civilians.
