New Study Finds Salt Substitutes Can Lower the Risk of High Blood Pressure
Excessive salt consumption has long been recognized as a major risk factor for developing high blood pressure. However, new research suggests that using salt substitutes instead of traditional table salt may significantly reduce this risk. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has found that older adults who incorporated salt substitutes into their diets had lower incidences of developing high blood pressure.
The research comes from the DECIDE-Salt trial, which was conducted at 48 elderly care facilities in China. The study included approximately 600 participants who had a blood pressure reading of less than 140/90 mmHg and were not taking any blood pressure medication. Over the course of a 2-year period, individuals in the salt substitute group were 40% less likely to develop high blood pressure compared to those in the traditional salt group.
Furthermore, the study revealed that participants who used the salt substitute experienced lower overall blood pressure compared to those who used table salt. Blood pressure readings between the two groups showed that the salt substitute group had a decrease in systolic blood pressure, the top number in a blood pressure reading, as well as a smaller decrease in diastolic blood pressure, the bottom number, compared to the salt group.
The use of salt substitutes appeared to prevent blood pressure from increasing rather than causing a decrease in blood pressure, according to the authors of the study. These findings suggest that incorporating salt substitutes into one’s diet may be an effective strategy for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels and lowering the risk of high blood pressure.
