Philippines’s Marcos pledges action in response to China’s ‘dangerous attacks’
President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines has issued a strong statement in response to recent confrontations in the South China Sea, stating that the country will retaliate with proportionate measures. This comes after Filipino soldiers were injured and vessels were damaged during clashes in the disputed waters.
President Marcos made it clear that while the Philippines seeks no conflict, they will not stay silent or submissive in the face of attacks. The country is prepared to respond with countermeasures against China’s aggressive actions, asserting their sovereignty in the region.
China, on the other hand, has blamed Philippine actions for the rising tensions in the South China Sea. A recent incident near Second Thomas Shoal led to three Filipino soldiers being injured and a Chinese envoy being summoned. China’s coastguard described their actions as lawful regulation, interception, and expulsion of a foreign vessel.
The United States has expressed support for the Philippines, reaffirming their commitment as a treaty ally. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reassured the Philippines during a call with his Filipino counterpart, emphasizing America’s solidarity with their Asian ally.
President Marcos also mentioned that the international community has offered to help the Philippines protect their sovereignty and maintain peace in the Indo-Pacific region. With tensions escalating in the South China Sea, the Philippines is standing firm in defense of their territorial rights, with the backing of their allies and partners.
