Tragedy Strikes as Unvaccinated Travelers Spark Measles Outbreaks in the US
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Erica Finkelstein-Parker’s plans for her daughter Emmalee’s eighth birthday party, themed around airplanes, were never realized. Emmalee, adopted from an orphanage in India, tragically passed away due to a rare complication of measles.
The resurgence of measles worldwide has been linked to declines in immunizations and rising vaccine hesitancy. In the US, doctors have diagnosed dozens of measles cases related to unvaccinated travelers, leading to outbreaks in several states. Measles is highly contagious, with each patient infecting an average of 12-18 people.
The measles virus can have serious complications and long-term effects, including secondary bacterial infections and immune amnesia. Early symptoms of measles include cough, lethargy, runny nose, pink eye, fever, and sensitivity to light.
Emmalee developed a fatal complication of measles known as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, which resulted in uncontrollable seizures and eventually coma. Despite the tragedy, Finkelstein-Parker found solace in bringing the unopened goody bags from Emmalee’s party to school, where her classmates shared their cherished memories of her.
This devastating story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vaccinations in preventing deadly diseases. With measles making a resurgence due to vaccine hesitancy, it is crucial for individuals to prioritize immunizations to protect themselves and others from these highly contagious and potentially deadly illnesses.
