Is there a Sriracha shortage looming? Company halts production until after Labor Day
California-based Huy Fong Foods, the renowned maker of the popular sriracha hot sauce, has issued a warning about an impending shortage of their signature product. The shortage has been attributed to the inadequate redness of jalapeño chili peppers, which are a key ingredient in the production of sriracha sauce.
This marks the third consecutive year that Huy Fong Foods has faced supply disruptions that have affected their ability to produce the beloved hot sauce. As a result, the company has made the difficult decision to halt production until after Labor Day, when the next chili season is set to begin.
In addition to the redness issues with the jalapeño peppers, Huy Fong Foods has also been impacted by droughts in Mexico, which have further strained the supply of essential pepper crops.
The previous shortage of sriracha sauce led to significant price gouging by third-party sellers on popular e-commerce platforms such as eBay and Amazon. Some sellers were charging exorbitant prices, with reports of a two-pack of 28-ounce sriracha bottles selling for as much as $72, compared to Target’s price of just $5 for a 17-ounce bottle.
Sriracha enthusiasts are advised to stock up on the spicy condiment while supplies last, as it may be a while before production resumes and the beloved hot sauce is back on store shelves. In the meantime, Huy Fong Foods is working diligently to address the supply chain issues and ensure that fans of sriracha sauce can get their hands on their favorite spicy condiment once again.
