Aspas reunited with Luis Suarez, his mentor in Liverpool
Figo, Feb 4 (EFE). – Iago Aspas, from the Spanish team, and Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez, LaLiga’s top scorer, will meet again on Monday at Wanda Metropolitano, nearly eight years after they established their friendship in Liverpool (UK).
The Galician striker was relegated to the Premier League after scoring 12 goals for Celta in the First Division, joining Brendan Rodgers’ project at Anfield, where Suárez was one of his officials.
They both hit that season, and it was the last for both of them in British soil because the following year Luis Suarez was transferred to Barcelona for 81 million euros and Aspas returned to LaLiga to join Seville.
The sky-blue striker played only 376 minutes in the Premier League and scored no goals, for 31 he did of course – he was the Golden Boot – the Atletico Madrid striker today, who coincided with Aspas on the pitch in seven matches with Liverpool, six from the league and one of Federation Cup.
Both were started by Rodgers only once, on 1 January 2014 in the match against Hull City at Anfield (2-0).
Aspas has always admired the Uruguayan striker so much that he, along with English midfielder Steven Gerrard, is considered “the best” footballer he has played with throughout his career.
Luis Suarez reached the match on Monday as the league’s top scorer with 14 goals, five more than his former team-mate, who withdrew from the race for the top scorer by the absence of three of his last four league matches due to injury, although he only follows much of Gerard Moreno.
