Identifying Measles Rash Symptoms as Virus Spreads in US – The Daily Guardia
The United States is currently facing a resurgence of measles cases, with 59 new cases reported so far in 2024. This marks an increase from last year’s count, highlighting a concerning trend in the country.
Measles, a highly contagious viral infection, was actually eradicated in the U.S. in 2000. However, in recent years, vaccination rates have been declining, leading to a rise in cases. At least 17 states have reported cases of measles, including outbreaks at an elementary school in South Florida and 12 cases in Chicago.
Globally, measles cases were up by 79% in 2023 compared to the previous year. The decline in vaccination rates worldwide has increased the risk of larger outbreaks, with the U.S. being particularly vulnerable.
In response to this concerning trend, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health alert in January warning of the growing measles cases in the U.S. and worldwide. Symptoms of measles include a cough, runny nose, high fever, rash, and muscle pain. The measles rash is highly contagious and appears as small raised bumps that cluster together before fading and causing skin peeling.
The good news is that the MMR vaccine is highly effective against measles, providing 97% protection with two doses. However, adults born before 1957 are presumed to be naturally protected against the virus.
Despite these precautions, small outbreaks of measles continue to occur in the U.S. Philadelphia and several Washington counties have initiated investigations after experiencing an increase in related cases. It is crucial for individuals to stay informed and ensure they are properly vaccinated to prevent the spread of this highly contagious disease.
