New Study Shows Incorporating More Whole Grains into Diet May Reduce Cognitive Decline
Incorporating more whole grains, such as popcorn, into our daily diet may have a significant impact on our cognitive health, according to a new study published in the journal Neurology. The research suggests that individuals who consume larger amounts of whole grains appear to be more cognitively youthful by an average of 8.5 years compared to those who consume smaller amounts.
The study, conducted by researchers from Rush University in Chicago, observed a total of 3,326 individuals with an average age of 75, who did not have dementia. It is worth noting that 60% of the participants were from the Black community. The researchers found that those who consumed three servings of whole grains, including popcorn, experienced a slower rate of cognitive decline.
Whole grains have long been recognized as nutrient-dense foods, providing numerous health benefits. These foods have been linked to reducing cholesterol, insulin levels, and blood pressure. Now, it appears that they also play a crucial role in maintaining cognitive function.
Interestingly, the study highlighted that Black participants were more likely to consume more than one daily serving of whole grains. This is particularly significant as people from the Black community are at a higher risk of developing cognitive decline and dementia.
The study was supported by the Alzheimer’s Association and the National Institutes of Health, underlining its credibility. However, further research is still needed to confirm the association between whole grain intake and cognition. Nonetheless, this study provides an important foundation for future investigations into the potential cognitive benefits of incorporating more whole grains into our diets.
