Leonardo DiCaprio testifies in a US corruption trial
American actor Leonardo DiCaprio testified in a corruption trial taking place in Washington (United States) v. Brass Michel, member of the musical trio The Fugees.
’90s hip-hop star Michelle is accused of helping secretly transfer money from Malaysian businessman Low Taek Goh to influence US policy
in his remarks, DiCaprio told the jury how the parties were financed by the businessman with money allegedly from the Malaysian Sovereign Fund.known as 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
The Hollywood star testified in court that Low staged a “a lavish party crowd with many different people from all over the world” Which celebrities used to attend, including rapper Brass Michel.
With regard to the relationship with the employer, The 48-year-old actor said that he met him in 2010 at a party in Las Vegas. After this first approach, the actor received many invitations to social events.
“I thought he was a great businessman with many different connections in Abu Dhabi, Malaysia (…) kind of a miracle business, incredibly successful”said the movie star.
On the other hand, DiCaprio talked about the businessman’s interest in financing the iconic movie “The Wolf of Wall Street” during 2013.
“My team and the studios gave me the go-ahead to accept Low’s financing (…) which meant the background check was fine and they considered him a legitimate businessman,” claimed.
By 2015, the “Titanic” star severed ties with Law after suspicions that he was involved in the disappearance of billions of dollars from 1MDB accounts.
According to investigations into the case, The (fugitive) Asian is accused of using 1MDB money to pay for his luxurious life, invest in a DiCaprio movie, do business with the rich and famous, and influence American politics.
The US Attorney’s Office reports that The Fugees member Brass Michel secretly funneled the businessman’s money to former President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign through shell companies.Which is considered an offense because it is an outside donation to a political campaign.
