COVID vaccine: US officials told to immunize pregnant women with virus

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday urged all pregnant women to get vaccinated against COVID-19, at a time when US hospitals are reporting troubling numbers of seriously ill and uninfected future mothers.

Women who are expecting a baby are at higher risk of serious illness and pregnancy complications from the coronavirus, including possible miscarriage and stillbirth. But their vaccination rates are low: Only 23% of them have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccineAccording to CDC figures.

“Vaccines are safe and effective, and it has never been more urgent to increase immunization, as we are facing the highly contagious delta variant and we are seeing dire consequences as a result of COVID-19 among unvaccinated pregnant people,” director he said. CDC, Dr. Rochelle Valensky, in a statement.

A CDC analysis of new safety data on 2,500 women did not show an increased risk of miscarriage for those who received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna before 20 weeks pregnant. The analysis found a spontaneous abortion rate of 13% to be within the normal range.

The CDC advice echoes recent recommendations from leading obstetrician groups. Previously, the agency encouraged pregnant women to consider getting the vaccine, but refrained from recommending it outright. The new advice also applies to nursing mothers and women planning to become pregnant.

Although the women on tape were not included in the studies that led to the licensing of COVID-19 vaccines, experts say that real-world experience from tens of thousands of women shows that vaccines are safe for them and when May provide some protection to newborns if given during pregnancy.
