CENTER COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) - Prosecutors in Center County say they will drop a felony aggravated assault charge against Penn State star hockey player Gavin McKenna.

McKenna followed the incident earlier this week on the evening of January 31, outside the Doggie Pub in Central State College.

McKenna is accused of punching a man in the face twice, causing the victim's jaw to be broken in multiple places and later requiring surgery, police said.

Investigators claim the attack stemmed from an "exchange of words" between a group of victims and people with McCann.

After further reviewing the video evidence, prosecutors believe McKenna "did not act with intent to cause serious bodily harm or wanton disregard for the value of human life."

As a result, officials said they will drop the aggravated assault charge against McKenna.

According to court records, McKenna still faces felony charges of simple assault, as well as summary offenses of harassment and disorderly conduct.

The 18-year-old hockey phenom is expected to be the number one draft pick in this year's NHL Draft.

However, it's unclear how those allegations will affect his draft stock or his availability to play at the next level.

In a statement to 6 News, Penn State Athletics confirmed the university is aware of the charges, but declined to comment further.

It's also unclear whether McKenna will face any sanctions from the team or the NCAA.
