World’s most livable cities in 2021: Auckland tops ranking in New Zealand
New Zealand’s Auckland has topped the ranking of the annual survey of EIU’s 2021 World’s Most Liveable Cities. Classifying 140 cities into five categories, including sustainability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure, this year’s edition has been hit hard by the global pandemic. Australia, Japan and New Zealand ranked higher, while European and Canadian cities fell in the rankings.
In the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Liveability Index 2021, six of the top ten cities are in New Zealand or Australia, “where strict border controls have allowed residents to lead relatively normal lives,” during the pandemic. Auckland led the assessment, “due to the successful approach to containing the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed its society to remain open and the city to score strong.” It was followed by Osaka in Japan, Adelaide in Australia, Wellington in New Zealand and Tokyo in Japan.
