Many may think that sports are something that only interests humans, and that only in disciplines such as equestrian there is participation of animals, but they are wrong.
Dogs can also play sports, and they have their own professional skills. Such is the case of the “surfers”, the dogs who practice surfing and who in various competitions demonstrate the skills they possess to master the surfboard.
“Man’s best friend” also loves water, and many even like to catch the waves. These dogs are special because dogs who learn to surf develop a unique attitude, knowing that they have something that sets them apart from other dogs, according to their owners who also surf.
Balance, focus, training and above all supporting their dreams are essential pieces for dogs to develop a talent for surfing and being the best surfer.
World Dog Surfing Championship
The biggest dog surfing competition in the world is called World Dog Surfing Championship It is based on the coast of California in the United States, where the concept of this sport originated, bringing together the talent of dogs from different parts of the world.
In addition to testing dogs’ talent for mastering surf, there are a number of activities during the event including a surfing competition, tents, activities, a costume competition, research, ball games, adoption and more.
For the competition, the dogs enter the water with their owners, who are the ones pushing the boards and deciding where to put their partners; But beware! You have to be smart and know where to do it: if the wave is too strong, the dog can fall, but if it is too weak, it can remain motionless in the water and not reach the shore, losing points.
There are six categories according to the weight and size of the animal:
– Very big dogs.
A team of two or more dogs.
Human dog team.
Each round consists of 10 minutes, during which the contestants must show their talent and catch as many waves as possible; If the dog slips or falls off the board, it will automatically be disqualified.
The score they get will depend on duration, technique, confidence, style, difficulty of surfing and how little or no the dog enjoys the activity which is one of the most important things for judges.
In this first round, the three competitors with the highest score in each category will be the winners. Then the first two places compete with the best of the other two categories (not counting the team categories) in a second round of the same length of time to determine the winner of the competition. The evaluation criteria are the same for both rounds.
This event is not only for sports and fun. A portion of the proceeds go to non-profit dog, surf, and environmental organizations. To support the cause, it is not necessary to reside in California and buy a ticket, you can also make donations through them web page.
Originally, the event was scheduled to take place on August 28, but had to be rescheduled for security reasons due to the increase in delta variant cases of COVID-19 in the entity. However, there is already a new date.
