The Antioquia Secretariat of Health confirmed on April 19 that there are covid-19 strains from the United Kingdom and Brazil in the department, which have the potential to be more transmissible, that is, an individual infected with it can infect more people than someone infected with the common variants.
As specified by the entity, in the samples analyzed – taken from December 22, 2020 to April 9, 2021 – a total of 23 different types of virus were confirmed, including the P1 (Brazilian) variant.
Regarding the cases of each case, the Secretariat confirms that there are confirmed cases of the Brazilian strain in Invegado, Medellin and Apartado. While B.1.1.7 (UK) has been confirmed in Medellin and Rionegro.
The Secretariat stated that these strains have already been confirmed in other cities in the country and that recommendations for people to take care of themselves, although similar, require more attention given the high rate of transmission of these variants.
“In studies published so far, these variants do not change the clinical characteristics of covid-19 or vulnerable age groups, but have the potential to be more transmissible, meaning that an infected individual can infect more people than an infected person. With covid-19 variants.” .
