IT’S Valentine’s Day but there will be no love lost between Sta. Clarita International School (SCIS) Primes and Hua Siong College of Iloilo (HSCI) when they clash in the championship match of the 2018 National Basketball Training Center (NBTC)-Iloilo leg today, Feb 14, 2018 at the Powerhouse Gym in Gaisano City, Iloilo.
Both teams reached the finals round after eliminating their respective opponents in the semifinals match on Feb. 12.
The Primes came through with a 14-point lead explosion to defeat archrival CenterPhil Montessori Learning Center (CMLC) SilverKnights, 96-82.
Former Palaro veteran Marvin Cuerbo erupted with 25 points while teammate Ralph Bajon chipped in 23 points to carry the Rodel Camacho-mentored Sta. Clarita to the finals.
The Janiuay-based SilverKnights coached by Andee Ticzon tried to stage a comeback with a wider rotation but failed to sustain their efforts until the end of the final period.
Cedric John Tigres led CenterPhil with 17 points while fellow cager Hiljohn Cartagena contributed 13 baskets.
In the second semis match, Hua Siong College of Iloilo blasted University of San Agustin (USA) Golden Eagles, 81-69, to book a ticket to the finals.
The Vincent Conlu-coached Hua Siong was led by Palaro star Mark Nonoy who scored 26 points in the game. Reynold Tupas and Jesse Sullano contributed 18 and 11 points, respectively.
The Golden Eagles coached by Jophil Cercado struggled in the field due to Hua Siong’s sticky defense. Simon Kevin Ong collected 15 points while Carl Malco earned 13 baskets.
The champion will represent Iloilo in the NBTC Region 6-A finals on Feb. 23-24 to be held at Buenavista, Guimaras.
