SAGAY MEN’S OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP: Sagay dethrones Ceres-USLS

SAGAY North Negros booters made a resounding return in the local competition scene after they outlasted Ceres-University of St. La Salle (Bacolod), 2-0, to capture the crown in the 2nd Sagay Men’s Open Championship at Sagay National High School (SNHS) football field, Jan. 10, 2018.

Jimuel Ariola and Clifford Tecson delivered crucial goals in the second half for the winning team.

With both clubs scoreless in the first 45 minutes of play, Ariola, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best Striker awardee, scored on a rebound play in the 48th minute, beating La Salle’s keeper John Mark Jamelo who was deep in the right post.

The defending champions tried to equalize the scoreboard with Jo Warren Bedia’s attempt in the 52nd period but Sagay’s Leoben Wayco, who was hailed Best Goalkeeper, tapped the ball over the cross bar.

The former champions failed to break the host’s defense in the second half as Tecson sealed the win for Sagay North Negros with another goal.

Sagay stalwarts Lemuel Unabia and Arnel Marcellana were named Best Defender and Best Midfielder, respectively.

Sagay City Mayor Alfredo Maranon III lauded the team’s well-deserved victory in the recent tournament.

“The event is a great opportunity for us to further promote our sports tourism program. Congratulations to all the competing teams and we expect a bigger event next year,” he added.
