THE Philippines’ U18 Girls’ basketball team showed the old form that won them the crown in 2017 as they defeated Singapore, 80-42, to retain the 2018 ASEAN School Games (ASG) tiara at the House of Champions Gem in Mall Cyberjaya, Malaysia, July 24.
The Pinay Lady dribblers captured the back-to-back title after sweeping all four games in the weeklong competition.
To recall, the team tasted its first victory at the expense of Indonesia, 91-44, on the opening day. They also eliminated host Malaysia in the second game, 80-58, before surviving Thailand, 71-69.
Kent Jane Pastrana of Negros and Karl Ann Pingol of Iloilo led the team which is mentored by Denden Velez.
According to Pingol, she was a bit nervous in the first two games but she regained her confidence after every win.
“Actually, nakakakaba kasi ang lalakas ng mga kalaban namin and we need to defend our crown kaya binuhos na namin lahat para ma-defend yung title,” Pingol said.
The 16-year-old native of Pototan, Iloilo said the experience was great and that it helped shape her for future goals.
“Okay naman game ko. Gin-pakita ko sa ila nga wala sila nag-hinulsul nga ginkuha nila ko for the team. Ginawa ko lang trabaho ko para sa team para mapanalo yung laro at mag-champion para sa Pilipinas,” she added.
Pingol said she accepted the offer to study and play for the Chiang Kai Shek College to develop her basketball prowess.
