THE basketball team of St. Robert’s International Academy (SRIA regained the title in the 2018 Milo Passerelle-Iloilo leg after defeating Hua Siong College of Iloilo (HSCI), 93-70, at the Ateneo de Iloilo (AdI) covered gym, Sept. 1.
With the win, the John Guanco-mentored Panda Rockets earned the rights to represent the province in the regional competition.
Gwyn Miles Pendon scored 18 points to cop the Most Valuable Player (MVP) citation. His teammates Kent John Parreñas and Gabriel Claridad chipped in 18 and 12 points, respectively.
The Robertians erected a 27-12 advantage in the first quarter. With the help of new recruits, the team extended their double-digit lead before the halftime, 42-29.
Hua Siong returned with a fiercer attitude and converted high-percentage shots midway through the third canto.
But the unstoppable Panda Rockets cruised to a comfortable 23-point advantage thanks to a high shot conversion at the shaded area.
In the fourth frame, the trio of Claridad, Parreñas, and Pendon stamped their class over the Red Phoenix and ended the championship game with a 23-point cushion.
Guanco said prepared hard for the tournament in order to win back the crown.
“We’re happy to pull off the victory this year. Our players stuck to our game plan and they focused on our defense and offense. We will really prepare for the regional next,” he added.
