Negros jins shine in MVP taekwondo tilt

TAEKWONDO jins from Hanah Taekwondo gym were on a roll in the 2018 MVP Best of the Best Taekwondo Championships held in Ayala Malls South Park, Muntinlupa, Sept. 9.

Veteran athletes Mary Angeline Alcantara and Joshua Emmanuel Deita, who captured gold medals, led the team.

Alcantara was hailed MVP in the under Junior Women in Kyorugi. She defeated Kristine Gaerlan of Diliman Preparatory School, 18-0 before eliminating Shyendler Cedo of Philippine Christian University Dasma Powerkicks, 8-1.

Alcantara, a 2017 World Championship Cadet gold medalist, also crushed Alexandra Nesle of Angeles University, 21-7, before upsetting Abigail Faye Valdez in the finals, 17-7.

On the other hand, Deita played well in the grade school boys’ event with a 10-4 win over Jonas Sales of Baguio Defender in quarterfinals before defeating Ramon Luistro of DPS, 22-17, in the semis.

He outscored Derek Poyagen of Baguio Bravehearts in the finals, 26-5, for the gold medal.

More then 300 student-athletes in the country participated in the annual taekwondo event.
