AN ILONGGO booter served as the hero for Kaya Iloilo after forcing a 1-1 draw against bitter rival Ceres Negros FC during their encounter in the 2018 Philippines Football League (PFL) at the Iloilo Sports Complex (ISC), June 9, 2018.
Shirmar Felongco of Calinog, Iloilo scored the equalizer for Kaya FC with five minutes left in the game.
The visitors drew first blood courtesy of Mike Ott’s goal in the second half.
But Felongco’s equalizer turned the sports complex into a giant party place as it proved that homegrown football talents can live up to the challenge.
With the win, Kaya maintained its hold on second place with 23 points on seven wins, two draws, and three losses.
Ceres is still on top of the league with 29 points on nine wins, two draws, and a loss.
Before playing for Kaya FC Iloilo, Felongco also competed in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) where he received three prestigious awards – Best Midfielder, UAAP season 73 and Best Defender, UAAP seasons’ 74 and 76.
“My recognitions also attracted offers and call-ups from United Football League (UFL) teams. My first team was Pachanga Football Club which won the UFL 2nd division and after that, I moved to the Ilonggo club Stallion FC and that time, we won the UFL Cup and league’s 1st division,” he said.
Felongco’s football story got brighter when he was called by the Philippine team to reinforce the Under-23 squad during the Association of Football Clubs Olympic qualifier held in Bangkok, Thailand.
According to Felongco, his hardships and sacrifices are all worth it because of his willingness and passion for football.
