Ilonggo SPED student wins Olympic medals

A 22-year-old student of SPED-Integrated School for Exceptional Children in Iloilo City came home triumphant after a grueling 10-day competition in Greece, bringing with him four medals.

Luis John Decolongon snatched three golds and silver in power lifting during the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games June 25-July 4 in Athens, Greece.

The games, which showcased athletic abilities by the handicapped, attracted 7,500 participants from 180 countries where 38 Filipinos also competed in six events namely athletics, aquatics, gymnastics, badminton, bowling, and power lifting.

Decolongon’s trainer, Rainier de las Alas Sr. said his ward prepared hard for eight months prior to the prestigious world tournament.

In the 2007 Special Olympics played in Beijing, China, Decolongon won four medals, making the Ilonggo athlete one of the most bemedalled athletes from the world’s handicapped. (PNA)
