THE Iloilo City Government recognized Ilonggo athletes after their impressive performances in the recent Muay Thai National Championship Visayas Leg at SM City Southpoint.
The Muay Thai Association of the Philippines in partnership with Iloilo City Sports Development Office hosted the regional sports event last week. The tournament featured various fight categories – Junior Male, Senior Male, Junior Female, and Senior Female.
In the Junior Male division, the gold medalists are Rene Enarsao Jr. of Banate, Iloilo and Nomer Lastimoso of Iloilo City (30 kg); and Edsie Oso of Roxas City (45 kg).
Still in the same division, Iloilo City players also snatched gold medals – Joseph Vlademer Betita (60 kg); Simon Aires Octaviano (67 kg); Benjo Querobin (48 kg); Jerson Parreño (51 kg); Jaymar Biclar (54 kg); and Shun Kervin Barreta (60 kg).
Franz Vincent of Passi City won the gold in 75 kg. The silver medalists are Sid Gerian Pasit of Passi City (45 kg); John Cantiga of Talisay, Cebu (48 kg); Johnmar Palmes of Passi City (51 kg); Kin Mark Bofill of Roxas City (54 kg); and Arlie Palmares of Passi City (60 kg).
The gold medalists in the Senior Male event are Mark Anthony Ninel of Talisay, Cebu (48 kg); Gabriel Lastimoso of Iloilo City (51 kg); Michael Rebayos of Talisay, Cebu (54 kg); Rouan Louegi Palma of Passi City (57 kg); Rhino Casipe of CAPANAY Iloilo (60 kg); Faith Angelo Azuelo of Passi City (63.5 kg); and Bernie Centino of Iloilo City (67 kg).
The silver medalists in the same category include Clent Castor of Passi (48 kg); Gueller Amino of CAPANAY Iloilo (51 kg); Michael Azin of Iloilo City (54 kg); Nisser Linggo of Dumaguete City (57 kg); Kenneth Gargatiel of Iloilo City (60 kg); Alexis Awit of Iloilo City (63.5 kg); and Elita Alderete of Iloilo City (67 kg)
Bronze medals went to Deogracias Celeste of Banate, Iloilo and Justine Sumido of Passi City (51 kg); Dennis Bayona of CAPANAY Iloilo (54 kg); Von Mark Mateo of Banate, Iloilo and Janrey Solis of Iloilo City (57 kg); Arwin Dureza of Passi City (60 kg); and Kenneth Sosbilla of Banate, Iloilo (63.5 kg).
In the Junior Female, the gold medalists are Nicka Palma of Passi City and Fatima Benas of Banate, Iloilo (42 kg); Miah Aleza Belisario of Passi City (54 kg); and Miah Claveria of Iloilo City (45 kg). The silver medalists are Passi City natives Alleah Cabrera (42 kg), Janela Pamonag (54 kg), and Abegail Biclar (42 kg).
Alyn Joy Marcelo of Banate, Iloilo also got the silver in the 45 kg category. Mariel Faith Dumapit (54 kg) and Christal Padernilla (45 kg) also won bronze medals. The two players are both from Passi City.
Boracay athletes also ruled the Senior Female event. Agata Rogalewski (48 kg), Matilda Lundquist (54 kg), and Carolina Castro (57 kg) won the gold medals while Debbie Joy Cabizan of Iloilo City brought home the silver in 48 kg.
Iloilo City Mayor Jose Espinosa III thanked and lauded the athletes’ spectacular performance during the three-day events from March 9-11.
“I congratulate all the participants who have spent long time learning and practicing the proper techniques of the game. This combat sport is not only best for self-defense but it can also boost self-confidence. I also commend the organizers for the success of the activity,” he added.
Moises Salomon, Iloilo City Sports Development officer-in-charge, said Muay Thai is one of the most popular sports, especially in self-defense.
More than 100 players from Antique, Boracay, Cebu, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Iloilo City, Passi City, Iloilo, and Roxas City, Capiz participated in this year’s tournament.
