HUA SIONG College of Iloilo (HSCI) Red Phoenix survived a late quarter rally by St. Robert’s International Academy (SRIA) Panda Rockets, 84-82, in the elimination phase of the ongoing Bingawan Foundation Cup-Preseason High School Basketball Premier Tournament at the Bingawan gym in Iloilo, June 11, 2018.
Palarong Pambansa veteran and Hua Siong point guard Reynold Tupas converted two crucial three-point shots, two free throws, plus the winning lay-up shot in the last 42 seconds of the fourth quarter to propel his team to victory. He scored a total of 25 points in the game.
With the victory, Hua Siong enters the semifinal round on Saturday as the No. 1 team in Bracket B.
St. Robert’s dropped to No. 2 and will play the quarterfinals game on Friday, 1:30 p.m. against the loser between the University of San Agustin (USA) Golden Eagles and the Sta. Clarita International School (SCIS) Primes.
In the second game, CenterPhil Montessori SilverKnights blasted Bingawan National High School, 110-69, to earn a berth in the quarterfinals scheduled on Friday, 3 p.m.
Lester Valn Paraico of CenterPhil led Silverknights with 19 big points in the game.
A total of 12 teams across the country are competing in the event in line with the celebration of Bingawan Foundation Day and Pagnahi-an Festival – Sta. Clarita International School (SCIS) Primes, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, Hua Siong College of Iloilo (HSCI) Red Phoenix, Hercor College Junior Jaguars of Roxas City, Chinese League champion Philippine Academy of Sakya-Davao Red Dragons, University of San Agustin (USA) Golden Eagles, Assumption School-Passi City, and a team representing Luzon from the Breakdown Basketball Inc.
The Bingawan Foundation Cup is the first Elite Regional Pre-season High School Basketball Tournament to be established in the region.
