HUA SIONG College of Iloilo (HSCI) bagged the 2017 Dumarao Mayor’s Cup championship crown after shocking Sta. Clarita International School (SCIC) Primes in the finals, 99-80, at the Dumarao covered gym on July 30.
Former Palarong Pambansa star Mark Nonoy propelled Hua Siong’s victory by scoring 20 points in the game.
His teammates Jean Raven Beliran and Jesse Sullano chipped in 21 and 18 points, respectively.
Hua Siong opened the first quarter with easy jumpers and layups while Sta. Clarita struggled in scoring.
The Rodel Camacho-mentored Primes were scoreless for more than 5 minutes, allowing Hua Siong to establish a 17-point lead at the end of the opening canto.
Sta. Clarita’s Ralph Bajon, who contributed 24 baskets, led his squad in the second frame as they tried to close the gap.
But the duo of Nonoy and Reynold Tupas led a run-and-gun assault which extended HSCI’s halftime lead to 58-32.
Sta. Clarita again staged a comeback with Palaro stars Franc Steven Tono and Giann Paul Nahine leading the assault.
The game plan worked for SCIC as they managed to cut the deficit to just 15 points, but Hua Siong dribblers were determined to get the crown and ended the third frame at 72-53.
Hua Siong head coach Bing Conlu then pulled out Nonoy at 6:42 minute of the final quarter after his team cruised to a 27-point lead.
Sta. Clarita tried to take advantage of Nonoy’s absence with four minutes remaining but HSCI was unstoppable in claiming the win.
Hua Siong team includes Victor Demadara, Ramon Sindico Pico, Mark Nonoy, Paolo Villariza, Cvee Palileo, Aj Gerochi, Jesse Sullano, Reynold Tupas, Jean Raven Beliran, Lee Jimera, and Richie Galvez.
Meanwhile, Hercor Junior Jaguars settled for third place after pounding CenterPhil Montessori SilverKnights, 72-66.
Jaguars Janwell Famaranco and Yuan Benedict Cari scored 19 and 10 points apiece while SilverKnights Cedric John Tigres and Ronald Silorio scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Hua Siong received P20,000 and a trophy while Sta. Clarita and Hercor got P10,000 and P7,000 cash prizes, respectively.
Dumarao Mayor Edgardo Arancillo, Vice Mayor Leslie Warren Benjamin, and Tournament Director Abwe Estenor awarded the cash prizes and trophies to the winners.
