CENTRAL Philippine University’ (CPU) Golden Lions secondary girls volleyball team scuttled Bacolod Tay Tung High School’s determined comeback bid to snatch the 12th Victor C. Plagata Cup crown, 3 sets to 2, at the Bingawan covered gym on May 12, 2017.
The Golden Lions actually started poor in the first and second sets after being hammered by Tay Tung, 22-25, 18-25.
But finals MVP Chris Ann Susbilla provided the spark for CPU in the third set with impressive blocks and attacks which resulted in a 31-29 drubbing of the Negros club.
In the fourth set, the never-say-die Centralians surged through combined efforts of Best Receiver Adrianne Celiz and Best Libero Pearl An Denura.
The Bacolod volleybelles, who were trained by Best Coach awardee John Philippe Loresto, tried to close the gap but to no avail. CPU forced the game to a decider set after ending the fourth set 26-24.
In the fifth and last set, Susbilla attempted solid kills but she was being roofed by Best Blocker Joan Marie Monares.
Susbilla eventually prevailed and sealed the win for her team.
Tay Tung’s Shane Carmona was named tournament MVP while teammates Alyssa Bertolano and Marriane Sotomil received the Best Attacker and Best Setter awards, respectively.
Included in the Mythical 6 are Marianne Sotomil (Tay Tung), Alyssa Bertolano (Tay Tung), Joan Marie Monares (Tay Tung), Chris Ann Susbilla (CPU), Shane Carmona (Tay Tung), and Adrianne Celiz (CPU).
