THE Bacolod City Council approved a P3.548-million budget for its delegation to the Palarong Pambansa 2017 in Antique, Apr. 23-29.
Student-athletes from Negros Island Region (NIR) are raring to prove their mettle against 17 other competing regions.
Councilor Caesar Distrito, chairman of committee on finance and appropriation, said the financial support was taken from the Special Education Fund.
“This will be used for the food, transportation, billeting, other essential needs of the athletes during the week-long sporting events,” he added.
Bacolod City ruled the recent Palarong NIR in Dumaguete City after hauling 156 gold, 94 silver, and 77 bronze medals.
Of the total medal tally, 69 gold, 33 silvers, and 34 bronzes were clinched by the elementary division.
DepEd-NIR Director Gilbert Sadsad they allocated around P9 million for the food and transportation allowances of the student-athletes, coaches, and officials.
NIR aims to improve its sixth place over-all finish in the 2016 Palarong Pambansa in Legazpi, Albay. They amassed a total of 21 gold, 28 silver, and 39 bronze medals.
Earlier, Iloilo also released a total of P10.5 million for its delegates – P6.5 million for the training of athletes and P3.9 million for their allowance.
Iloilo will be fielding 410 athletes, coaches, and chaperons.
