Bacolod City aims to host 2019 SEA Games

BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Jan 3, 2018 that he supports the dream of Mayor Evelio Leonardia for this city to become one of the hosts of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games (SEA) Games.

In a text message, Lacson said Leonardia should sit down with Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. and discuss the hosting.

Lacson said the provincial government is ready to create a resolution urging the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the SEA Games organizing committee to hold some of the events here.

When asked what sport he wants the city to host, Lacson replied he is looking at boxing and football which attract huge crowds.

In December 2017, Leonardia urged Pwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) party-list Representative Mark Sambar to push for the city’s possible hosting of the games.

“I will raise that up, and I think I have the whole city of Bacolod and even the province of Negros Occidental backing me on that,” Leonardia said.

Sambar said the current cities chosen to host certain sporting events are Clark, Pampanga and in Metro Manila.

But Sambar said he would certainly forward the proposal to PSC Chairman Butch Ramirez and SEA Games Organizing Committee chairman Alan Peter Cayetano.

Bacolod City hosted the 23rd SEA Games in 2005, particularly boxing, football, weightlifting, and volleyball events.
