Antique 90% ready to host Palaro 2017

A TOP official of the Department of Education lauded the preparation of Antique province in hosting the 60th Palarong Pambansa on April 23 to 29, 2017.

Department of Education Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali said the province is now 90 to 95 ready for the sports event.

He reported that the memorandum of agreement between the provincial government and the Department of Education was already signed March 16

“We’re very much impressed and we are getting there. We still have a month to prepare. We have a clear timeline and we are on the right track,” he said.

Umali made a side trip to Iloilo before he proceeded to Antique on Mar. 17 to check its readiness as a first time host.

He added that they are only working on the billeting quarters that will house the delegates.

“DepEd has downloaded P30 million for the construction of the classrooms that will serve as billeting quarters. The provincial government is also funding the additional construction of makeshift kitchen, toilets and shower rooms,” he said.

He said he will also check the preparation of the playing venues such as the track oval, baseball diamond, and other location for contact sports.

The technical officials and 18 regional sports coordinator will also discuss again the possible modifications in some guidelines as based on Olympics, he added.

 

WHAT’S NEW

Umali reported that this year’s Palaro will be introducing new events such as the Aero gymnastic and dance sports which will be included under the demonstration sports for the first time.

The four demo sports such as wushu, wrestling, futsal, and billiards will now become regular sports.

For the first time since 1948, DepEd will give a Palarong Pambansa Parangal to an alumnus or alumna who can inspire the athlete to excel in sports.
