A TOTAL of 27 futsal teams in the city and province of Iloilo joined the 1st Bga. Marianing Futsal Competition which opened at the Iloilo National High School (INHS) and West Visayas State University (WVSU) covered gyms, Oct. 8, 2017.
The event organized by the Futsal Association of Region 6 is sanctioned by the Philippine Football Federation.
Eleven teams will compete in the U18 boys and girls, while 6 teams will test their mettle in the U15 boys.
According to Pablito Araneta, president of Futsal Association of Region 6, the competition will help develop the skills of young players in the field of futsal which is now becoming a popular sport in the country.
“This tournament will give young players a venue to improve their skills in futsal. Mariano “Nonong” Araneta, Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president, is one of the major sponsors of this competition. He wants to scout Ilonggo players who are manageable and can be trained to compete in bigger and stronger matches,” Araneta added.
Meanwhile, Edwin Caro Laru-an, project director for football in the province of Iloilo, welcomed the participants during the opening ceremony.
“As the football director, we want to introduce futsal to our youth. Aside from football which is one of the well-known sports in the province, we also want to test our Ilonggo booters to try this indoor game. In our various local and national games, we always win the game against other best teams across the region,” Laru-an added.
The elimination round will resume on October 14 while the semifinals and finals matches will follow on October 15 at the Iloilo National High School Gym.
