Rotary backs ‘End Polio Now’ in Aklan

AROUND 400 Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, and students in Aklan joined the global call for polio eradication through a Color Fun Run held Oct 28, 2017 at Kalibo International Airport in Kalibo town.

“The event was a public image project aimed to boost the campaign againts polio and I believe we have achieved that goal. The Rotary Club of Kalibo believes that ending polio will need the extra shove from all of us to make it a reality. We have always been extra active in raising awareness and funds to finally erase this disease from the earth,” said RC Kalibo President Alexys Apolonio.

The event was organized by Rotary Club of Kalibo with the Rotaract Club of STI-Kalibo.  Five Interact Clubs led the morning event, which was in line with the celebration of the World Interact Week. These clubs are Interact Club of Regional Science High School VI, Interact Club of Infant Jesus School, Interact Club of De La Cruz Institute of Business and Industry, Interact Club of Aklan National High School for Arts and Trades, and Interact Club of New Washington National Comprehensive High School.

The run, a fund-railing activity, finished at Kalibo Pastrana Park where runners enjoyed the entertaining zumba dance.

Maan Bustamante, Council of Interact Clubs president, is hopeful the event inspired others to recognize that polio remains a pressing concern.

“As an Interactor, with the color fun run, we were able to show our support and spread awareness about ending polio to our fellow youth. We organized the event with only few participants in mind, and to see more from the expected number is so overwhelming. The Council of Interact Clubs is very much grateful to everyone who helped us in organizing the event, Rtn. Alexys, Rtn. Danica, and to the Rotary Club of Kalibo, that were very supportive of us since Day 1 and to everyone who participated and supported the cause of Color Run: End Polio Now,” she said.

RC Kalibo also held a caravan in town proper and Bingo for Polio to boost the End Polio Now campaign. Proceeds will be donated to the Rotary Foundation Polio Plus.

Meanwhile, the club hosted the District Governor’s Visit of RID 3850 DG Jundad Legislador from RC Kabankalan.

RC Kalibo toured DG Legislador to various projects completed by the club, including the Rotary Friendship Park in Brgy. Tambak, New Washington, Aklan.
