Results of September 2018 EE Licensure Examination

THE Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Board of Electrical Engineering announced that a total of 3,135 out of 4,697 examinees nationwide, or 66.74%, passed in the Electrical Engineers Licensure Examination given in Manila, Cebu, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Lucena, Iloilo, Legaspi, Tacloban and Zamboanga this September 2018. Two thousand eight hundred seventy six (2,876) out of 3,712, or 77.48%, of the first takers passed.

In the Regional level, 3 engineering schools in Western Visayas out of 11, or 27%, performed high or with a passing percentage higher than that of the national level: two (2) in Iloilo City and one (1) in Negros Occidental. High performing engineering schools from the Region with 10 or more examinees are ISAT University (100% passing) and Central Philippine University (92.86% passing). ISAT University and Central Philippine University have thirty eight (38) and fourteen (14) examinees respectively. One (1) out of 3 high performing engineering schools, or 33.33%, is a state university while two (2), or 66.66%, are private universities. The Region produced 146 passers out of 248 takers, or 58.87% passing percentage.

This is lower than that of the national passing percentage. There were 184 first takers and 64 repeaters who took the said examination. The first takers passing percentage is 70.11%. The repeaters passing percentage is 26.56%.

Starting this academic year (AY) 2018-2019, the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) is a 4-year baccalaureate degree program. It centers on the generation and utilization of electricity for industrial, commercial, and residential purposes. Apart from the production of electricity, the BS in Electrical Engineering also deals with the development and real-life applications of electrical circuitry, digital systems, electrical equipment, and machine control.

The curriculum is designed to equip students with a solid grasp of mathematical, scientific, and engineering concepts, through classroom education and laboratory exercises. The laboratory exercises will familiarize students with the different devices and methodical techniques essential in the practice of electrical engineering. Some of the necessary skills a student should possess in order to excel in this course are the mathematical skills, analytical skills, critical thinking, technical skills, English skills, communication skills, creativity, and interpersonal skills.

Some of the common jobs for Licensed Electrical Engineers are Technical Support Engineer, Electrical Installer, Electrical Field Service Engineer, and Junior Programmer. The mid-level positions for Electrical Engineers are Electrical Design Draftsman, Junior Electrical Engineer, Electrical Foreman, Computer Systems Engineer, Optics Engineer, among others.

Advanced positions are Senior Electrical Engineer, Systems and Storage Administrator, Project Engineer, Satellite Communications Engineer, academician, among others. There are also a lot of job opportunities abroad for graduates of BS in Electrical Engineering. Filipino electrical engineers are in demand in countries, such as, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Brunei, Malaysia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain.

In the Philippines, many factories, firms and power plants are not enough to cater engineers who are ready to practice their professions. As a result, many engineers, including those who didn’t pass in the licensure examinations are sometimes forced to choose jobs that are not related to their field. Furthermore in the next decade there are identified major challenges in all engineering profession in the country. Hence, there is a need to educate our engineers including that in the other developing of under-developed countries. Engineers in these countries must learn new ways to solve problems; to promote green engineering to improve sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint in manufacturing, and the need to identify viable alternative energy sources.

There is a need to address climate change through engineering innovation.
