Agriculture, forestry and fisheries in the 21st century (Conclusion)

FOREST is an important resource for the development of this country especially in our fight against global warming. Forest is a home to flora and fauna. It provides a recreation area and eco-tourism sites needed to boost our tourism industry and improve our economy while delaying climate change. In CY 2000, forestlands in the Philippines comprised 15.8 million hectares or 53% of the total area of the country.

In the 2015 United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report, the Philippines ranked 5th among 234 countries with the greatest reported gain in forest area annually.

According to FAO, the country has significantly increased its forest area from 2010 to 2015. This is attributed to the National Greening Program of the government launched in CY 2011. The forest rehabilitation program aimed to plant 1.5 billion trees on 1.5 million hectares of forestlands nationwide from 2011 to 2016.

The Global Economy focus on the global problems: to improve crop yield, reduce water consumption, and increase profits by using technology in agriculture to improve operations .New trends in agriculture technology changed the ways farmers manage their operations. These are new developments in machinery, software and genetics that allow farmers to have more control over how they plant and manage their crops. Using agricultural technology, farmers no longer have to apply water, fertilizers, and pesticides uniformly across entire fields. It decreases the use of water, fertilizer, and pesticides, which in turn keeps food prices down. It reduces impact on natural ecosystems.

Agricultural modernization is the process of transforming the agricultural sector into one that is dynamic, technologically advanced, and competitive, yet centered on human resource development and guided by the sound principles. Integrating these aspects of Modern Agriculture in the curriculum is a great challenge to our authority in agricultural education.Modern farming technology increases the quantity and quality of agricultural products. Farmers of the 21st century should have access to GPS, soil scanning, data management, and other related advance technologies. By adapting with this modern farming technology, farmers can greatly increase the effectiveness of pesticides and fertilizers and on how to use them. In this Century, a number of global trends are inducing food security, poverty, and the sustainability of food and agricultural systems. As one of the leading agricultural countries, we need to adapt with this global trends in farming.

Studies showed that we need to produce 70% more food in 2050. Roughly 800 million people worldwide suffer from hunger and around 650 million people will be undernourished by 2030. We cannot deny the fact that very little innovation has taken place in food industry hence food scarcity and hunger will stillbe an issue in the coming decades. To meet these challenges, a concerted effort by governments, investors, and innovative agricultural technologies is a must.

Modern Agriculture no longer depend on applying water, fertilizers, and pesticides uniformly across entire fields. Instead, farmers will use the minimum quantities required and target the very specific areas. Farms and agricultural operations will have to be run very differently, primarily due to advancements in technology such as sensors, devices, machines, and information technology. Sophisticated technologies such as robots, temperature and moisture sensors, aerial images, and GPS technology shall be applied. Advanced devices and precision agriculture and robotic systems will allow farms to be more profitable, efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly. The government plays an important role in solving food scarcity issues now and in the years to come through modern agriculture.
