BACOLOD City – “They seem to be desperate.”
This was the reaction of Vice President Leni Robredo over proposals to name the Senate President as the successor if something happens to the President.
“They are trying everything to remove me. There was a case in the Supreme Court, an impeachment case too which did not prosper,” Robredo said.
Robredo was in Bacolod yesterday as guest speaker of the 5th Negros Occidental Small Fishers Alliance (NOSFA) Provincial Congress.
Robredo added that some congressmen did not know about the amendment proposed by House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, adding that they were just forced.
“Let me remind Congressman Vicente Veloso, Chairman of the House committee on constitutional amendments that I won over Mr. Marcos by 100,000. We all know that every election in the Philippines those who won are charged by those who cannot accept defeat,” she said.
She added that, “If they remove the provision on succession what will be left. It is better if there will be no vice president anymore. The mandate of the vice president is to replace the president if something happens.”
Senate President Vicente Sotto III has already said it will not pass the Senate.
Robredo also said that, “This is a reminder to our people that we should not be complacent because they are finding ways to oust me from office.”
“This time not through an election but through other means. But I know our countrymen will not let this happen,” Robredo said.
Meanwhile, Robredo called on the Filipino people to vote deserving candidates and not just those who are popular.
Robredo made the appeal amid low ratings of the opposition’s senatorial candidates.
She said that the low ratings “are expected.”
“The president is popular and in a mid-term election, it is a factor. But, it should not be a reason to vote for someone just because he or she is popular or winnable but we should choose who deserves (the position),” she pointed out.
Robredo said that when she ran, her survey rankings were low, too.
“But the people, if they see you, talk to you, and feel you are a true person they change their voting attitude,” she said adding that their candidates “are not just appointed but they go through intense deliberations and a study of their capabilities.”
