Teacher resigns over sex abuse claims

BACOLOD City – An elementary teacher of the JR Torres Elementary School in Barangay Singcang-Airport here was forced to resign after he was accused of molesting 18 school boys.

Officials from the Department of Education (DepEd) declined to name the 18 victims, who were all Grade 5 students of the school.

The victims accused their teacher Joselino Labtic of allegedly molesting them on several occasions.

In a radio interview, one of the victims, who is now a Grade 6 student, said they weren’t able to tell their parents or other teachers that they were being molested because of fear and embarrassment.

The local DepEd Division in Bacolod City has already relieved Labtic last February 16 after the allegations surfaced.

DepEd officials said they did not receive any official complaint from the students or their teachers regarding the allegations but they initiated the probe on their own.

The office was supposed to file an administrative case against Labtic, but he submitted his resignation on Monday and has not reported for work ever since.
