BACOLOD City – One person died while two others were injured after a tanker slammed into a truck, a tricycle, and a motorcycle along the intersection of Bangga Metal in Barangay Alijis, Bacolod City, afternoon of Sept 7, 2018.
Police have yet to release the names of three injured victims as of press time.
On the other hand, Gary Tabafa, 34, of Barangay Cabug here died from the incident.
Witnesses told traffic investigators of Police Station 7 that the three vehicles stopped on the northbound lane and were waiting for the traffic lights to turn green when the tanker driven by Francisco Bantad Jr, suddenly slammed into the tricycle and motorcycle.
Both vehicles were sandwiched between the truck and the tanker.
Bystanders immediately pulled out the victims from the wreckage.
Tabafa, who was driving the motorcycle, died on the spot.
The injured persons were immediately rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment.
Bantad told reporters that he tried to apply the brakes on his tanker after seeing the traffic signal turn red.
But he claimed that the brakes failed, which led to the accident.
He said locked himself inside the tanker and waited for police to arrive for fear that angry bystanders might maul him.
Bantad apologized to the victims adding that the owner of the tanker is willing to cover their treatment fees and the burial expenses of Tabafa.
The victims have yet to decide if they would press charges against Bantad, who is now detained at Police Station 7.
