BACOLOD City – Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary Jesus Hinlo said President Rodrigo Duterte’s silence on the fate of Negros Island Region (NIR) is a good sign.
“It shows that he is thinking,” Hinlo told The Daily Guardian.
Hinlo said there is still no update on what and when the President will decide on NIR’s fate after he has submitted his recommendations and memorandum to Malacanang in late April.
“For me it is a good sign,” he stressed.
Hinlo took the cudgels for NIR after DILG Secretary Mike Sueno was axed from his post by the President himself.
Reports on NIR’s abrogation became rife in 2016 because of alleged budgetary constraints.
The NIR was created through an executive order issued by former President Benigno Simeon Aquino before his term ended last year.
The EO mandated that Negros Occidental and Oriental will form one region as these are situated in one land area.
